The Plug-In Battery: everything you need to know

The Plug-In Battery is currently only available in The Netherlands. If you want to read all the info about it in Dutch, you can read it here.

The HomeWizard Plug-In Battery saves your solar production for later use. Use your solar power optimally and supply your home with solar energy, day and night. This relieves the energy grid and is also sustainable!

You can easily install the Plug-In Battery yourself. Plug the battery into a wall socket and install it via the HomeWizard Energy app. We have listed the most frequently asked questions about the Plug-In Battery below.

1. Pre-order and delivery

How does pre-ordering the battery work?

Demand for home batteries is rising fast, and supply is limited. The first batch of our Plug-In Battery is already in production, with different delivery dates. With a reservation through a €50 deposit, you can secure one (or more) of the first home batteries that are already in production. This allows us to scale up according to demand. As soon as your battery is ready to be shipped, you will be notified to pay the remaining amount. You can pre-order up to 4 batteries. The delivery month listed during pre-order is the current expected delivery. If the delivery is delayed, you can cancel your reservation free of charge and receive a full refund of the deposit.

What if I change my mind after the deposit?

Did you pre-order a Plug-In Battery, and do you want to cancel? You can cancel at any time. To ensure a fair queue for the Plug-In Battery, deposits are not refundable in case of cancellation. In the unlikely event that the delivery is delayed, your deposit will be fully refunded upon cancellation. Please contact us to initiate a cancellation.

Is the battery €1395, or am I stuck with extra charges or a subscription?

The Plug-In Battery costs €1395. This includes free software and updates. There are no extra charges, and you don't need a subscription. However, you need a P1 Meter (€29.95) to control the battery.

Will this also work in Belgium?

Sales of the Plug-In Battery will first start in the Netherlands. Each country has different laws and regulations, so we want to focus on one country at a time.

2. Supplies and installation

What do I need to get the Plug-In Battery working?

You require a wall socket and space to place the battery. You will need:

  • A Wi-Fi connection to the internet

  • A phone or tablet running on Android or iOS

  • Solar panels

  • A smart meter

  • A HomeWizard P1 Meter

The Plug-In Battery works independently from energy suppliers, inverter brands, and solar panels.

I don't have HomeWizard. Can I use the battery?

The Plug-In Battery works with the P1 Meter (sold separately) to control the battery and balance the power supply in your home. The P1 Meter costs €29.95 and gives you access to the free HomeWizard Energy app, which allows you to install the home battery. There are no other costs involved here.

Does it matter which energy supplier I am with?

No, it does not. The Plug-In Battery works independently of energy suppliers.

Can I install the HomeWizard Plug-In Battery all by myself?

Yes, you can. Plug the battery into a wall socket and install it easily via the HomeWizard Energy app. If you want to connect four batteries or discharge more than 800 watts, we recommend having an installer do this.

Do I need a smart meter?

Yes, you need a smart meter and a HomeWizard P1 Meter to control the battery and balance the power supply in your home. The P1 Meter clicks into the P1 port on your smart meter, and you can install it using our app. The P1 Meter is sold separately.

Do I need solar panels?

Yes, to use the HomeWizard battery, you need solar panels. The Plug-In Battery stores your solar surplus for use inside your home.

Do I need an Energy+ subscription?

No, you do not need a subscription. With the battery, you get free updates and support.

What changes in the app when I add a HomeWizard home battery?

The layout of your app mostly stays the same. When the sun is not shining, your home's continuous consumption will drop because the energy will be taken from your battery. If you have a solar consumption graph thanks to a connection with your solar panels, you will see your share of solar consumption (self-consumption) increase. The Plug-In Battery will give you a graph showing how much the battery is charging and discharging.

What is the maximum number of batteries I can connect?

You can connect up to 4 batteries (possibly more later). Set-ups of 1 to 3 batteries can be connected to multiple wall sockets without any issues. If you want a setup with four batteries, we recommend connecting it to its own group via an installer. The maximum discharge power is always 800 watts, regardless of the number of batteries. If connected to their own group in your circuit breaker box, this can be unlocked to the number of batteries times 800 watts. That means 1600 watts of charge and discharge for two batteries, 2400 watts for three, and 3200 watts for four batteries.

Can I connect the Plug-In Battery to a power strip or extension cord?

We do not recommend connecting the Plug-In Battery to a power strip or extension cord. If you connect several high-power devices to a power strip, the strip or plug may become too hot. These are often not designed for long-term and daily high power consumption.

Where is the best place to put the battery?

Place the home battery in a frost-free and safe location inside your home. Do not put the battery in direct sunlight. Popular locations include the attic, landing, basement, garage, central heating room, or technical room. We do not recommend placing the home battery in a location that must remain passable in case of emergencies, such as escape routes. The home battery cannot be placed outside.

Can I place the home battery outside?

No, the home battery cannot be placed outside. Sunlight, humidity, and sub-zero temperatures negatively affect the battery's operation, lifespan, and safety. Most batteries placed outside are actively heated to prevent them from freezing, which only costs extra power.

Can I easily carry the Plug-In Battery and use it outdoors?

The Plug-In Battery is suitable for indoor use only. It is not intended to be moved regularly.

Will I see elements of my Plug-In Battery on the Energy Display?

Yes, you will soon be able to choose to show:

  • how full your battery is

  • live information about how many watts your battery is (dis)charging.

Will you be reducing the delivery time?

We don't assume it will be any sooner, but we constantly look at what is possible. The delivery time takes this long because we take the quality checks and shipping into consideration, in addition to the production time. We follow the reservation list in chronological order. If people from the November delivery cancel their reservation, you have a chance of receiving the Plug-In Battery earlier if you registered early for the March delivery. However, we cannot reveal your spot on the reservation list.

3. Functioning of the Plug-In Battery

Can the battery charge on dynamic tariffs?

No, our focus is on keeping your solar power in your home as efficiently as possible for when you need it yourself. Charging and discharging based on low hourly rates under a dynamic contract is not supported because the daily price differences are too small to be financially or environmentally beneficial.

Why can't the Plug-In Battery charge dynamically in the dark winter months?

Many people underestimate what the winter sun can do, especially with 2.7 kWh; a home battery can charge more than expected. The difference between the lowest and highest price per day isn’t high enough in winter to reap the benefits of dynamic charging. The battery is less efficient in the darkest months compared to the other nine months, but the winter sun does more than most people would have you believe. At 2.7 kWh, we make the most of efficiency.

Can I make money on an energy imbalance market with the battery?

No, The Plug-In Battery focuses on storing the renewable energy from your solar panels. Therefore, you are not tied to an energy supplier. Some energy suppliers promise hefty returns by selling batteries, with which they 'trade' on various imbalanced markets to make money. Imbalance-controlled batteries charge or discharge every 15 minutes to equalize supply on the national grid with demand. By doing this, you usually overload the grid in your neighborhood.

Trading via the imbalance market seems lucrative because you can charge and discharge up to 4 times more per day than keeping the power in your house for your use at night. This makes the potential return per day higher but shortens the battery life due to cell degradation from much more frequent charging and discharging.

Currently, mainly in the business market, more and more battery capacity is deployed on trades in the imbalance market, making it uncertain how lucrative this market will remain for consumers. After all, the more batteries trading on imbalance, the less there is left to earn.

Can a home battery be plugged in?

Yes, it is allowed. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has established that, as a consumer, you can use a limited amount of your solar surplus through a wall socket. For this, we follow the European standard (EN/IEC 50549) that allows a limit of 800 watts and additional HomeWizard patented safeguards that go beyond this standard to achieve a safe product. What happens if the power goes out?

If the power fails in your home, the battery also switches off for safety. This prevents power from being left on during work. The battery cannot be used as an emergency power supply. Using batteries as an emergency power supply is costly and complex in many homes because they can only be installed as a customized system per home with the proper protections.

How does the battery work with a 3-Phase connection?

Suppose you place the HomeWizard Plug-In Battery on a different phase than your solar panel inverter. In that case, it means that you generate solar energy on one phase, and simultaneously charge your battery via another phase. Your smart meter calculates the sum of the consumption of the three phases, regardless of what happens on which phase. So, for efficiency, this doesn’t matter. However, if the battery is connected to the same phase as the solar panels, it is sustainable and better for the balance of the grid.

Does it matter which phase I generate solar power on if I have 3 phases?

Your smart meter always calculates the sum of the 3 phases. If you generate 2000 watts on one phase and take off 2000 watts on the other, the meter will calculate 0 watts. So, it doesn't matter which phase the battery is on, especially if you have a 3-Phase solar inverter. If you buy multiple batteries, it is convenient to split them across various phases in some situations. That's because, in most cases, each phase in the house can handle 25 amps, and each battery can use 3.5 amps.

Does the battery turn off when the mains voltage is too high?

The battery stops discharging if the mains voltage becomes too high to protect the appliances in your home (EN 50549-1/2). Because the home battery will mainly discharge at night when the mains voltage is lower, this hardly ever happens.

Does the battery also lose power?

Yes, with any battery or inverter, some power is also converted into heat. With efficient power conversion to the battery and back, you have less heat and, therefore, less loss. The loss depends on the ambient temperature and how charging and discharging are done relative to the maximum output of the inverter (keep in mind between 75% and 88% efficiency in real conditions). By using micro-inverters, the HomeWizard Plug-In Battery is much more efficient than home batteries with larger inverters. Most manufacturers quote efficiency figures under laboratory conditions (with the most ideal set-up).

Can I see the solar consumption graph without the kWh Meter or inverter connection?

No, to provide insight into solar consumption (self-consumption), we need to know how much solar energy you generate. This is only possible with a kWh Meter or inverter connection.

Can the Plug-In Battery switch on a kWh Meter?

From Q2 2025, this can be done by installing (or having installed) a HomeWizard kWh Meter on your primary connection.

Can I install a home battery without a smart meter?

From Q2 2025, this can be done by installing (or having installed) a HomeWizard kWh Meter on your main connection.

Does a home battery work with old smart meters?

Yes! The Plug-In Battery works based on the data from your smart meter. Therefore, the more accurate the data, the more efficient the home battery will work.

I will change energy supplier, what now?

No problem. The Plug-In Battery and P1 Meter work independently of energy suppliers.

Does my EV charging station get in the way of my battery?

If you have an EV charging station, you can simply use the Plug-In Battery. Different scenarios are possible depending on how the charging station is controlled.

When you charge your car, it will use solar energy from the battery if your solar panels are not generating enough at the time. Since the battery and car do not communicate with each other, you cannot prioritize this. If your charging station has a function to charge based on remaining solar power, it depends on whether the battery or the car goes first.

How do I know which phase I connect my home battery to?

Once you have installed the battery, you can see which phase the Plug-In Battery is connected to within the 3-Phase graph.

Can the battery function as a battery when the power goes out (or when camping)?

No, if the power goes out inside your home, the battery also switches off. So you cannot use the battery as a battery for when the power goes out.

Does it matter what connection I have in my home/circuit breaker box?

It does not matter which connection you have in your circuit breaker box. Just plug the home battery into the wall socket. If you want to connect four batteries, you have to connect them to their fuse box.

I hear my battery switching. I hear clicks. What does this mean?

You may hear one or more clicks as soon as the battery switches between charging and discharging. This is normal.

Can I also control the Plug-In Battery with an API?

The battery has a local API to read out data to other systems (read-only). We are exploring the possibility of making one or more batteries securely and locally controllable via this API.

4. Capacity

How many batteries do I need?

How many batteries you need depends on your power consumption at home, how much solar surplus you have, and what you want to achieve with your battery. Maximum efficiency or maximum sustainability, for example. On sunny days, you want to get your battery as empty as possible during the night. To do this, look at your average offtake from the grid per day during a sunny week in spring or summer. Imagine here that you take 20 kWh per week from the grid. This means you need an average of 2.8 kWh per day to store. You can consider maximum consumption and average daily use for maximum sustainability. Whatever you choose, you can always add a Plug-In Battery later if your goal or consumption changes.

Is 800 watts of discharge enough for my home?

With a discharge of up to 800 watts, you can supply power to many appliances and electronics in your home. Think of your TV, lights, fridge, router, laptop, PC, and a part of your dryer. What you use above 800 watts just comes from the grid as usual. An average home has no consumption above 800 watts 92% of the time. Still able to discharge more? With multiple batteries, you can choose to have them connected to their own group to turn off the 800-watt limit. In most homes, this provides about 10% extra power displacement per year because you can also wash and cook with solar energy from the battery.

Can the Plug-In Battery discharge at more than 800 watts?

We recommend a dedicated group (or even several dedicated groups per phase) if you want to discharge with more than 800 watts. Distributing the battery across different groups or phases without proper technical knowledge is complex and can, therefore, be risky. This increases the likelihood of errors and can be dangerous as you deal with the electricity in your home. Thus, HomeWizard recommends an expert if you want to discharge with more than 800 watts.

5. Sustainability

Is the Plug-In Battery sustainable?

Yes, with a home battery, you use green power from your solar panels at night. The average CO2 emissions of a kWh of gray electricity from the grid is 0.37 kg. The battery has an average CO2 emission of 600 kg CO2 (production and transport). With this data, it can be CO2-neutral within as little as three years. The main component of the battery is lithium. Lithium can largely be recovered during recycling, reducing mining and environmental damage.

How green is the stored energy?

The HomeWizard Plug-In Battery stores your solar energy for use later. Instead of taking power from the grid, you can take renewable solar energy from your Plug-In Battery. You use solar energy during the day, evening, night, and morning. During the day, the battery jumps in to absorb peaks in energy consumption. Solar power is renewable energy and, therefore, very green.

How quickly can I earn back the Plug-In Battery?

How quickly you have earned back a home battery varies depending on your situation. Consider your fluctuating power price, solar surplus, power consumption, and taxes. This makes the payback period different for each situation, country, and household. With a battery, you become less dependent on these uncertainties because you keep more of your power at home and use less from fossil sources such as oil, coal, and gas. With average consumption, we estimate that the payback period is about six years with an electricity price of €0.35.

Do I avoid solar surplus penalties with a home battery?

The costs for adding surplus solar power to the electric grid and how they are calculated differ from one energy supplier to another. With a home battery, you add less solar power to the grid because you store it inside the home battery.

6. Warranty and safety

Do I have a warranty on the operation of the Plug-In Battery?

Nobody wants guarantees or insurance that you don't use but pay for upfront (indirectly), especially if it turns out that you fall outside the conditions when you do need it. That is why we offer 'Swap Service' up to 7 years after purchase or 4000 cycles. In the unlikely event your battery breaks down, we will be happy to help you:

  • If your battery fails within two years, we will collect it and replace it with a new one free of charge.

  • Does your battery break down in years 3 to 7? No worries. Whatever broke, we will come and collect it from your home and replace it with a newer home battery than the one you had. This costs €329.

With other batteries, you often get a longer but limited product warranty. This means that you cannot have the product repaired within the warranty at no cost. Think of call-out charges, repair costs, and parts that are out of warranty or considered wear and tear. At HomeWizard, whatever needs to be repaired, we will collect your faulty battery from you and give you a working one.

With a HomeWizard Plug-In Battery, you know where you stand, your purchase price stays low, your payback time is short, and you only pay when needed.

The expected lifetime of the battery is 15 years.

The Swap Service mentioned does not cover user damage, such as drop damage, water damage, or use other than described in the user agreement. We don’t offer support in setting up your own Wi-Fi network correctly.

What about the warranty when installed without a plug?

Is the Plug-In Battery connected without a plug to a fuse box in your home? The warranty still applies even then. The home battery should be disconnected so that whoever comes to collect it can take the Plug-In Battery with them without unplugging it.

Is the battery a fire hazard?

When using any type of battery, such as a charger for your mobile phone, tablet, or electric bike, there is always a tiny chance of fire. Fortunately, the chances of this happening are low. The Plug-In Battery has a fireproof casing. Also included in the HomeWizard Plug-In Battery are high-quality recyclable lithium phosphate (LFP) cells. These cells belong to the safest category regarding battery fire safety thanks to their high-quality composition and do not contain controversial conflict metals such as cobalt and manganese. The HomeWizard Plug-In Battery also has built-in sensors such as lift, drop, and heat sensors to detect misuse and prevent disabled components. These sensors have been extensively tested by an external company.

How do insurers look at home batteries?

Most building and home insurance policies have written nothing about home batteries in their policy conditions. This means that, in most cases, you are simply insured. However, this can be different in every country, and we recommend that if in doubt, to always contact your insurer and check this information.

How much distance should I keep around my Plug-In Battery?

You should keep a distance of 10 cm at the sides and 50 cm at the top. If you stack several Plug-In Batteries on top of each other, the same applies with 50 cm space above the top one.
